"They gave us memory to have roses in winter.".”
The proposal takes advantage of the extensive territory offered by the wind and the sea using it to revive the prestige and enthusiasm of the city. A large Atlantic Park, over two kilometers long, will rebalance the city's relationship with the sea and will be a permanent invitation for residents and visitors to have “roses all year round”.
The intervention space provided for the competition is a territory of nature, a border between the city and the sea. It can be, therefore, a multiple space, multipurpose, mixed by construction and contemplation. This idea was pursued by drawing with the nature in search of a more attractive and welcoming space.
The Plan seeks to value the occupation and transformation of the area within a very concise concept that materializes in three gestures:
First - let nature work by helping it in the requalification and environmental enhancement, through the densification and preservation of the green structure, as well as the installation of a natural dune system that will enhance biodiversity while reduce the perceived distance to the sea.
Second - improve pedestrian and cycling accessibility to the beach to create universal mobility by installing new walkways and pedestrian bridges that overcome the differences in elevation between the marginal and the sand. At the same time introduce a dedicated pedestrian and cycle pathway connecting the Mondego river shore to the center of Buarcos;
Third - enhance or replace the existing buildings, with a new balneary in Buarcos, sports areas and skate-park, as well as a multipurpose arena next to the "clock", in order to provide the beach with better conditions of comfort and programmatic offer.
In the end the 'desert' is expected to turn into a good Atlantic Park.
